Triodos Bank is a savings bank that claims to be “100% ethical”. Rather than avoiding unethical companies, it goes a step further and lends money only to companies or organisations that it believes are having a positive impact on the world. Examples include social housing, renewable energy and organic farming.
Triodos is unusual in that it refuses to lend out more money than it receives from savers (most banks lend out more than they own).
Triodos is not listed on the stock exchange but is owned by shareholders who are each limited to a certain number of shares, to ensure diverse ownership.
Triodos offers savings accounts and loans, but it does not offer current accounts.
