Is the bank a retail bank only, or is it a “universal bank” (including both a retail bank and an investment bank)?
In the UK, nearly all banks have both retail and investment wings. These include Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, RBS, Santander and Standard Chartered. The Co-operative Group has no investment banking wing, nor do most smaller banks. In 2007-08, problems with investment banking had knock-on effects on the retail wings of universal banks. This is generally considered to have contributed heavily to the financial crisis of 2008.
